I last checked Raspberry Pi prices on eBay about a month ago out of curiosity. I shouldn’t have been surprised at how much they were selling for. Don’t get me wrong, if there’s something I really, really want and don’t want to wait for, I’ll fork out some extra money to buy it (which is how I got my Gmail account years ago), but $300? Really?
Since additional orders are now being accepted (if you know where to go), these little computers aren’t selling as high as they were just a month ago. If someone is unable to even place an order and there’s no “light at the end of the tunnel”, the eBay auctions appear to be more valuable since that’s the only way to get a Raspberry Pi soon. If people manage to find a site such as TinyPuters.com they can put their order in and will at least have the security of knowing they’re finally in the queue to get one. I’m sure people will continue buying them off eBay right up until the day that availability is where it needs to be, but they won’t sell for $300 like they were.
As of this writing, they’re selling for between $70 – $110 which I think is a more reasonable range for those who don’t want to wait. I know I’ll be receiving mine in August though, so I’ll continue to follow the news and wait patiently until that magic little box arrives on my doorstep.
